8 Registry Hacks to Tweak Your Windows PC

8 Registry Hacks to Tweak Your Windows PC

=============================

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1. Disable USB Devices:
++++++++++++++++

Disabling USB ports can be a smart idea to add security to the computer. This can be really handy if the computer is on a public place where the chances of virus and other malware infection is really high. You can easily disable access to USB ports with the following registry TRICK:

1 Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> Type regedit and hit Enter)

2 In the registry, navigate to the following key:

( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor )

3 In the right-side pane, double-click on “Start”.

4 In the “Value data” field enter 4 and click on “OK”.

5 Close the Registry Editor and reboot.

To enable USB devices, follow the same procedure as above except in the step-4 enter 3 in the “Value data” field.

2. Disable Notification Balloons in Windows 7 and Vista:
===================================

You can now disable the annoying notification balloons that keeps popping up frequently with warning messages and reminders. Here is a step-by-step procedure to do that:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced)

2 Right-click on the right-hand pane, and create a new “DWORD”.

3 Rename it to EnableBalloonTips, double-click on it and set the “Value data” to 0. Reboot the computer to see the changes in effect.

3. Add “Recycle Bin” to My Computer in Windows 7 and Vista:
======================================

Would you like to add the “Recycle Bin” icon to My Computer so that you need not go back to the desktop to access it when required? Well, here is how you can do that:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace )

2 Right-click on “NameSpace” and select New -> Key. Name the key with the following name:

{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

3 Now, open “My Computer” and hit F5 to refresh the screen. This should show up the “Recycle Bin” icon.

4. Disable the Windows Task Manager:
=========================

Need to limit access to your computer by disabling the Task Manager? Here is a simple registry hack to do this:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies)

2 Right-click on “Policies”, select New -> Key and name the key as System.

If you are on Windows XP, you need not create the new key “System” as it is already present in it. So, you can directly navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System in the Step-1 itself

3 Right-click on “System”, create a new “DWORD” and name it to DisableTaskMgr.

4 Double-click on the DWORD “DisableTaskMgr” and set the “Value data” to 1 (0=Enable, 1=Disable\).

5 To enable the Task Manager, Set the “Value data” back to 0.

5. Change the Registered Owner and Organization Name:
=====================================================
Here is a simple hack to change the name of the Registered owner on your computer:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to:

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion )

2 On the right-side pane, find the keys RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization. Double-click on them to change the names to whatever you want.

3 To see the changes, right-click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”.

6. Add Programs to Windows Startup:
========================

You can now add your favorite programs to Windows Startup without the need for using the start-up folder. Here is a way to do this:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run )

2 On the right-side pane, create a new “String Value” and rename it to the name of the program that you want to add (you can give any name, it doesn’t matter).

3 Double-click on the “String Value”, in the “Value data” field add the path of the executable program that has to execute at startup.

4 Reboot the computer to see the changes in effect.

7. Add “Pin to Start Menu” Option for Folders in Windows 7 and Vista:
====================================

Ever wanted to pin a folder to the start menu to gain faster access to it? Well, it is possible to add the “Pin to Start Menu” option so that you can plug your favorite folders to Start Menu. Here is a step-by-step procedure:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to:
( HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers)

2 Right-click on “ContextMenuHandlers” and select New -> Key. Name the key as follows:
{a2a9545d-a0c2-42b4-9708-a0b2badd77c8}

3 Now, whenever you want to add a folder to Start Menu, hold down the Shift key and right-click on the folder. You should see the “Pin to Start Menu” option in the context menu”.

8. Disable “Aero Shake” in Windows 7:
========================

One of the new additions to Windows 7 is the “Aero Shake” feature using which it is possible to grab a window using its title bar and shake it. This will minimize all the other open windows if any. It is really a handy feature! However, if you ever wanted to disable this feature, here is a solution:

1 Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
( HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows )

2 Now, right-click on “Windows” key and create a new Key called Explorer.

3 Right-click on the “Explorer” key and create a new “DWORD” called NoWindowMinimizingShortcuts and set its value to 1.

4 Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer to see the changes in effect.

=================================
I hope you enjoyed this post. Try the registry hacks and share your experiences.

New Lenovo Tablet Allows Windows 8 Users To Run Android Apps Using Emulator

One of the biggest problems plaguing Windows 8 is its limited variety of apps. The Windows App Store pales in comparison to the app stores of its main competitors – the iTunes Store and the Google Play Store – and that has left many early Windows 8 adopters frustrated.

But Lenovo seeks to solve that problem with an innovative solution. Lenovo has joined forces with a company called Bluestacks in order to allow Windows 8 users to seamlessly run Android apps over their computer.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Lenovo’s solution might seem outlandish, but it’s actually pretty straightforward. Bluestacks creates an emulation of the Android operating system by running a Java Virtual Machine on top of Windows 8. When users start up their computer, this emulation will automatically run, allowing users to browse through hundreds of thousands of apps in the Google Play Store.

Users download the apps and play them within the emulated Android operating environment. Since most games are optimized for touchscreens, Lenovo is expected to unveil the feature primarily on its touchscreen laptops.

Sure, Lenovo is fixing the failures of one platform by cramming another one awkwardly on top. But for Windows 8 users who are hungry for apps, this feature could make a world of difference.

WHICH LENOVO PCS WILL INCLUDE ANDROID APPS?
All Lenovo Idea-branded consumer PCs will come pre-loaded with the emulation software. That means Android apps will be accessible from day one, and Windows 8 users will be able to experience the best of both worlds.

Window 8 Tips

Microsoft is releasing Windows 8, the newest version of the Windows operating system, for general availability on October 26. Although Windows 8 offers enhanced security features, it also raises new security concerns because of changes to the graphical user interface and a new online app store. We’re offering the following eight security tips to help you stay secure as you move to Windows 8.
1. Exercise caution with apps for the new Windows 8 user interface (formerly known as Metro)

Some familiar applications have been completely re-written for the new Windows 8 UI. As a result they may work completely differently, despite looking the same. For example, an application historically delivered as an executable could now be entirely web-based. This impacts the visibility your existing security and monitoring tools have into these apps.
2. Use the Windows 8 style UI version of Internet Explorer

By default, plugins are disabled, blocking a major target for exploit kits and Blackhole attacks.
3. Make sure your security vendor can flag malicious Windows 8 UI apps

Windows 8 UI apps have important differences from regular applications, and your security product should be able to distinguish the two. The security product should correctly flag malicious or modified Windows 8 UI applications (tampered, modified, invalid license).
4. Disable hard drive encryption hibernation

Hard drive encryption is a cornerstone of data protection. If possible, disable the hibernation option in Windows 8 through group policy, as it doesn’t always work well with encryption.
5. Make sure your hardware carries the “Designed for Windows 8” logo

To carry this logo, hardware must be UEFI compliant. This means you can take advantage of the secure boot functionality available in Windows 8. Secure boot is designed to ensure the pre-OS environment is secure in order to minimize the risk from boot loader attacks.
6. Make application control a priority

The Windows 8 app store makes application control increasingly important for both malware prevention and productivity control. While the Windows Store will be secured, history shows that malicious apps are likely to slip through. Disable the use of apps that aren’t relevant to your organization.
7. Treat Windows RT (ARM) devices like any other mobile devices

Make sure you impose the same security levels on Windows RT devices as all others. You should have the ability to control, track, remote wipe and encrypt them.
8. Review application permissions in the Windows Store

Applications in the Windows Store must list any resources they require. Carefully review these permissions in the details tab as some will grant access by default to your location information, calendar, etc.

You should still run a full security suite for superior filtering and centralized management and reporting. While Microsoft has included a minimalist antivirus and firewall, most organizations will still require commercial-grade security. And of course, all the old security rules also apply with Window 8. It’s still a bad idea to allow automatic log-on. Above all, remain vigilant.

11 handy tips for Windows 7

11 handy tips for Windows 7

Don't you love it when you find a new shortcut to get across town or uncover a cool feature on your latest gadget? Windows 7 is full of "I didn't know you could do that" surprises. Among the many great enhancements in Windows 7, here are some of the small gems that you might not be aware of.

1. Surpass basic math

Calculator has several dynamic new features—click the View menu to check them out. Unit conversion translates Celsius to Fahrenheit, kilometers to miles, meters to feet, grams to ounces, joules to BTUs, and more. You can use the new calculation worksheets to quickly compute everyday stuff like fuel economy and auto lease payments. The Programmer and Statistics modes handle the geekier tasks.

2. Send information to tech support

The next time you find yourself trying to describe a complicated computer problem to a friend or tech support, give Problem Steps Recorder a try. You can record a series of screen shots, add notes, and email them directly to whoever is helping you. For tips on using Problem Steps Recorder, read this article.

3. Move your taskbar

Did you know that you can move the taskbar to the top, right, or left sides of your screen? Watch a quick video demo.

4. Customize your clocks

Have friends, family, and colleagues in different time zones across the world? Add clocks to your taskbar to keep track of the time in their area. Or add a clock gadget to your desktop. You can even choose from eight different clock designs. Here's how to add and personalize gadgets.

5. Create and share themes

Like a little variety? With Windows 7, you can design, save, and quickly change your computer's themes (desktop background, window border color, sounds, and screen saver). You can even create a new theme, like one that showcases a slide show of your favorite photos as your desktop background, and easily share that with friends and family. Learn more and watch a video about how to create a theme.

6. Drag files from Jump Lists

With Jump Lists, you get a quick-access list of your most frequently or recently used files. Just look for the right-pointing arrow next to programs on your Start menu or left-click a program on the taskbar. You can use Jump Lists to open files and programs in just a few clicks. Even better, you can drag items from Jump Lists into open folders or email.

7. Preview your files

Another great time saver is the file preview pane within a folder or library. Use it to see a file's contents without opening the file in a program. You can open the preview pane in a window by pressing Alt+P. Items such as photos and PDF files will be previewed in this area when you click them. Learn more about using files and folders, including the preview pane.

8. Help reduce eye strain with ClearType

ClearType is a tool that improves the readability of the text on your LCD screen. So if you feel the text isn't displaying sharply, use ClearType. The tool will take you through a series of screens, much like an eye exam, to help you achieve the sharpest text possible.

9. Easily customize your Sticky Notes

Now you can make the Sticky Notes you keep on your desktop even handier. You can format the text and change its color, as well as resize, collapse, and flip through several Sticky Notes. If you have a Tablet PC or touchscreen, you can use multiple input (pen and touch) methods within a single note. Learn how.

10. Get to know the new Paint

This classic Windows software has been improved in Windows 7 with new brush effects such as watercolor, crayon, and calligraphy. Paint now comes with an easy-to-use ribbon for all the cool features that you use the most. And with a touchscreen you can finger-paint, including using two fingers to create separate brush strokes simultaneously.

11. Quickly find anything on your computer

Windows Search is the fastest way to locate and open any file on your PC, including documents, email messages, music, photos, and more. To use Windows Search, click the Start button , type one or two keywords, and see search results appear almost instantly.

How to: Build Your Own Windows Home Server

Think of a home dedicated server as your ultimate backup solution for movies, music, data, and photos. With most of our day spent online, data hoarding is an unconscious habit. Learn how to setup and build your own windows server. As we all know, digital media comes with the dangers of wear, tear and crash.
Don’t miss: Reusing an Old PC as a Server

A Windows Home Server is not only a backup failsafe but can also become an interface to stream your content over your small home network. The how and why is covered by this tutorial.

The Best Things about Windows Home Server
Easy backups – Easy data redundancy through backups for 10 Windows PCs can be configured. WHS syncs one copy of each file disregarding the number of copies in multiple computers. Data backup can be made selective for individual drives or specific folders.
Shared access – Create user accounts and give shared access to your friends and family over the network.
Remote access – Remote access the WHS over a network address using the in-built Console Connector client software.
Stream to any device -The Windows Media Connect UPnP server software allows any compatible digital media receiver (like the Xbox 360, PS3, or Windows Media Player 11) stream movies and music off the home network.
Extend and expand – Add or replace storage devices seamlessly as WHS automatically formats new storage devices and treats all drives as a single unified storage space.
The Hardware - The Maximum PC tutorial recommends building your own as it will be more customized and you can also scavenge parts from old computers. Here̢۪s the hardware list.

Total Cost: $860
Building your Home Server:

Step 1: Prep the case

The Antec 200 is a budget case with six 3.5-inch drive bays and easy expandability with an external easy-swap SATA bay and an adjustable fan speed switch.

2. Install the parts

Installing the components is about care and alignment. It should be done on static free surface. The tutorial details the steps from fixing the CPU on the motherboard to inserting the RAM modules and finally mounting the drives. If you’ve never built a computer before, check out our beginner’s guide.

3. Wire and connect

With all the components in place, the attachment of the SATA data and power cables comes next. Wiring is all done with the plugging in the other components to the motherboard connectors and the chassis outlets. If you choose to self host for your small business setting up a server to keep your Microsoft products integrated properly is key.

4. Install Software

Windows Home Server can be installed using an external optical drive or a bootable Flash Drive. The installation is simple and user friendly. The basic installation is followed by networking the other PCs. The networking also involves setting up the WHS Connector password on client PCs. This is the time to install all the latest updates and patches for WHS.

The Settings console is where most of WHM management takes place. Configuring the WHS settings involves scheduling backups, setting up user accounts, deciding on the shared folders for media streaming, checking out the Disk Management features and installing and managing third-party add-ins. Here are 5 essential add-ins available which make WHS do a whole lot more.

5. Accessing Your Server

A server is typically not stand alone. There are four ways to remote access and manage your server.
Manage it from the Console software
Browse shared folders from Windows Explorer by typing in the network URL.
Using the homeserver.com domain for remote access.
Using Remote Desktop in the client PC to access WHS̢۪s desktop.

6. Tweaking for Maximum Performance

Optimize the performance by tweaking settings for speed, automatic syncing, handling video formats and other enhancements. A home built server based backup solution can be designed around your needs. As this tutorial shows, it is not too difficult. Alternative home server options like HP MediaSmart LX195 and Acer easyStore H340 are also worth a look. But all home server options provide one common denominator – peace of mind.

Are you thinking of setting up your own server based backup solution? What are the specs you are looking at?

If the idea is appealing, take a look at some of our previous posts about data backups.

Picture Password in Windows 8

For those that are really looking forward to Windows 8, you may have a very interesting feature for identification.

This possible feature is “picture passwords”, which involves the user selecting an image of their choice and then drawing on it with selective gestures, like the dot, circle, and line that you see in the image to the upper left. Basically, the lines, circles, and taps help to unlock Windows just like a typewritten password or thumbprint scan.
